Licketyspit are delighted to be touring a new production of Magic Spaghetti around Scotland this Autumn, from September 8th to October 24th 2010.
Magic Spaghetti was hugely enjoyed when it first toured in 2005 as a promenade production.
This will be an end-on performance so we can tour to many more of our regular Scottish venues and a number of new ones!
Magic Spaghetti tours with an interactive exhibition, 'The Slurpermarket!' and Licketyspit's usual free programmes, puppets and high quality teacher's resources. |
Magic Spaghetti is set in the imaginary town of Scotaly. Strega Nona returns from her adventurous travels to find her home town in the grip of a food-fad. She raises eyebrows with her 'fancy' cooking but rumour has it she has learned a bit of handy magic.
One by one her neighbours pay her a visit and Strega Nona is always cooking! It would be rude not to try it - but don't tell a soul! Big Tony only eats Spaghetti. Imagine his delight when he spies Strega Nona's Magic Pasta Pot! One day she goes out and Tony seizes his chance to invite the town for a feast. Big Tony is a hero! Until they discover he can't stop the pot..... |
Responses to the 2005 production
'This was a fantastic production. I loved it as much as my son. He was actually jumping up and down with excitement when we went outside'. (Parent)
'This is by no means a dull preachy piece. Larger than life characters, teamed with a wicked sense of humour, played out with such energy that the audience can’t help but get caught up in it'. (LIST) (Parent)
Jamie Oliver would surely consider Licketyspit on the side of the angels as far as children and their eating habits are concerned. For Magic Spaghetti, the companies ambitious new site specific show cheerfully celebrates the benefits of ditching automatic 'yeuch!' responses and trying new things.
Charm and whimsicality, as well as genial performances and daft humour, soon whet young audiences appetites. (THE HERALD)
'a modern-day fairy tale'
Licketyspit have concocted a modern-day fairy tale that sells its young audience on the merits of fresh, flavoursome food.enlivened by songs, catchphrases, movement and just a touch of slapstick.
(THE SCOTSMAN)
'a hymn to healthy eating, served up with a welcome dose of be-flagged Italian sunshine'
Licketyspit has established that it has a creative spark. There is much to admire in Magic Spaghetti, a musical inspired by a Calabrian folk tale and set in the composite country of Scotaly.Comic characters such as the cross-dressed Mrs Frilliness will enthrall young children.
Licketyspit has its finger so firmly on the public pulse it almost cuts off the circulation. Magic Spaghetti not only does for pasta what Delia Smith did for the boiled egg, but it is also a hymn to healthy eating, served up with a welcome dose of be-flagged Italian sunshine before a back drop of a sun drenched Tuscan town, by a lively and talented quartet of actors.
